Cybersecurity

I have a keen interest in encryption and how to encrypt data correctly. Whether we’re talking AES, RSA, ECC or quantum algorithms, I’ve got you covered. Also, with my 20 years of experience building email systems, I can easily explain in lay terms technologies like SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

I’ve created and managed CVEs, reviewed infrastructure designs for security flaws and advised software teams on how to manage customer data according to cybersecurity best practices.

Software Development

I’ve been coding since I was a kid. I spent a lot of my time deconstructing and rebuilding old computers back in the Intel Pentium days and your box had a Turbo button. Professionally, I’ve been developing software for over 20 years and have spent much of my time as an team leader, taking on the Architect role.

I’ve built systems big and small including implementing email systems, APIs and websites.

I’m fluent in all of the major programming and scripting languages (C/C++, Java, Python, Perl, Javascript), and operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux/Unix).

Risk Management

In order to work in security I think it’s imperative that you have a basic understanding of risk management. Without the understanding of risk and how to work with it, you will make very poor decisions.

This doesn’t just apply to technology, but in all areas of life.

Science (Physics, Electromagnetism)

While my professional career has mainly focused on software development, I spent a lot of my youth discovering and understanding various areas of science. Two areas are of particular note: Physic and Electromagnetism.

In university I spent the bulk of my time studying quantum mechanics and the nature of light. Focusing mainly on lasers and optics. However, I have a broad range of knowledge related to science and love to teach people about the latest discoveries.

Music

Have I mentioned I’m a classically trained pianist? Music is very important to me as both a creative outlet and stress relief. I can play piano and drums at a performance level, as well as, guitar at a casual level.

I have been known to sing from time to time (karaoke anyone?) and have been in multiple choirs and vocal groups over the years.

Sports

Baseball is by far one of my favourite sports (Go Jays!). But, I love a lot of sports: soccer, hockey, football (NFL and CFL). I’m in many fantasy leagues and like the analytical aspect of sports.
