Technology, Training and Expertise

Cybersecurity Partner, Trainer and Expert Witness

My entire life has been focused on technology. I spent my youth taking apart the Commodore 64 and putting it back together. As I grew up, I lasered in on an electrical engineering degree from the University of Toronto. Since then, I’ve worked as a software engineer for small startups, big enterprises (IBM) and eventually settled in at Proofpoint where I’ve honed my skills in cybersecurity.

I currently work at Proofpoint as Staff Product Security Engineer. I help ensure our products are following the best cybersecurity practices and help mitigate risk.

However, I am available to help out other firms/individuals with security training and as an expert witness at trial. Feel free to reach out to me and let’s see if there’s something I can help you with. Or check out my blog to see if my content and expertise interests you.

Areas of Interest

Cybersecurity

I have a keen interest in encryption and how to encrypt data correctly. Whether we’re talking AES, RSA, ECC or quantum algorithms, I’ve got you covered. Also, with my 20 years of experience building email systems, I can easily explain in lay terms technologies like SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

I’ve created and managed CVEs, reviewed infrastructure designs for security flaws and advised software teams on how to manage customer data according to cybersecurity best practices.

Software Development

I’ve been coding since I was a kid. I spent a lot of my time deconstructing and rebuilding old computers back in the Intel Pentium days and your box had a Turbo button. Professionally, I’ve been developing software for over 20 years and have spent much of my time as an team leader, taking on the Architect role.

I’ve built systems big and small including implementing email systems, APIs and websites.

I’m fluent in all of the major programming and scripting languages (C/C++, Java, Python, Perl, Javascript), and operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux/Unix).

Risk Management

In order to work in security I think it’s imperative that you have a basic understanding of risk management. Without the understanding of risk and how to work with it, you will make very poor decisions.

This doesn’t just apply to technology, but in all areas of life.

“I am very seldom interested in applications. I am more interested in the elegance of a problem. Is it a good problem, an interesting problem?”

– Claude Shannon
